As we enter into the month of March, the countdown to International Women’s Day (IWD) rapidly approaches us. IWD is celebrated annually on March 8th and is a global movement dedicated to honouring women’s achievements, raising awareness of gender equality, and advocating for women’s rights. It is a day to reflect on progress made, recognise ongoing challenges, and inspire collective action for a more inclusive world.
The origins of IWD date back to 1908, when thousands of women marched in New York City demanding better working conditions, fair wages, and voting rights. A year later, the first National Women’s Day was observed in the U.S. In 1910, the idea for an international celebration was proposed at the International Socialist Women’s Conference, leading to the first official International Women’s Day in 1911, celebrated in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. The United Nations officially recognized IWD in 1975, solidifying its place as a global movement.
